  4. I have several songs that I have enjoyed listening to…
As we listen to a song that we haven’t heard in decades or just years, our mind flashes back with almost forgotten images and sounds. We pause to savor the moment while we concurrently listen to the song and reminisce with refreshing thoughts.

The memories are almost always pleasurable because of the incredible way our minds conveniently forget the angst we once felt. It’s better this way, because we are safe to remember anything we want.

The best moment comes when we:

    1. Once liked the song

    2. Have not heard the song in a long time, almost forgetting it

    3. Associated a memory that occurred when we had first heard the song.

Some enduring song memories have been:

    • 1957? Eddie Fisher singing “Oh My Papa”. I was about to drink from a water fountain in a park just across the street from an Italian restaurant playing their AM radio on a table just outside the store. I was just a kid back then enjoying the summer recess. The song was incredible! The song made me think of my father and memories of him teaching me to ride a bike, teaching me to swim, teaching me to fix my bike… They all were good memories…

    • 1962? The Tokens - “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. I was listening to the radio in the kitchen just after dinner and then I heard the song. It was truly the most unusual, eerie and enchanting song that I had ever heard! The high notes in the background, the jungle rhythms, and the drums…it was haunting in a nice way. Several years ago, on PBS, when the Tokens sang their song in an oldies special program, I was able to attach faces to the voices! It only took 45 years!
    • 1973? ABBA singing “Fernando”. I was driving to work, in the early 70’s, thinking about my projects, my college courses and all the usual thoughts we all have about work and friends when I heard Fernando for the first time. It was absolutely incredible to hear the perfect clarity and precision of every note, the rhyme and rhythm, the refreshing novelty and break away from the commonplace disco music at that time. Back then, I was much too engrossed in work to really pay attention to music…I didn’t know who ABBA was…I figured a woman?

Then there was a passage of about 2 decades and then…OK, now don’t laugh, but about 1997 my wife and I were watching a movie titled “Muriel’s Wedding”. It was about a young woman pursuing her dream of meeting a man, getting married…the usual. What I liked about it was not the story but, rather, the music! ABBA songs were all over the place! I finally discovered who ABBA was, their other songs, and that I liked just about all of them!

    • Ames Brothers - “Melodie D’amour” - The memory trigger for this one came about differently. While the song was from the 50’s, I did not remember it until about 2006 when I read an article about the Mills Brothers version of the song. I preferred the Ames Brothers rendition a bit more…it was from a time when songs were not shouted out over the background of drums and electric guitars.

Music helps bind and structure life’s memories.

  5. My favorites are:

Desperados Under the Eaves by Warren Zevon (1977). They have a smooth beat that I like and quite poetic…like this
“And if California slides into the ocean
Like the mystics and statistics say it will
I predict this motel will be standing
    Until I pay my bill.”

Grateful Dead from the early 70s. They have melodic vocals.
Back then, it seemed surprising that they could be reflective and spiritual. Who knew?

  6. The Who from 1966 with Keith Moon’s incredible drums, especially Won’t Get Fooled Again.

I “rediscovered” this song while listening to a commercial a few years back!
It was refreshing to hear this song again when Hummer chose it for one of their commercials. Neat!

  7. My favorite is Jimmy Hendrix all of them especially Purple Haze, Are You Experienced, Voodoo Chile.

These were great songs from the early 70s and the first wave of really new music … thanks to Hendrix, who was so instrumental in getting the popularity.

  8. My favorite song that I listen to is ABBA Andante, Andante. It’s a soft easy song just right for the summer. The lyrics are so soothing…”Take it easy with me, please Touch me gently like a summer evening breeze…”

  9. I recently watched the movie “Miss Potter”…very good movie… and was awestruck while viewing the closing credits and listening to an incredible and beautiful song… Katie Melua - When You Taught Me How To Dance. I searched the internet for her song and found it on you website…Well done! By the way, I like the way your site continuously plays top quality music. Thanks

  10. I like ABBA and have listened to their songs ever since I was a teenager who watched “Muriel’s Wedding”. Besides Dancing Queen, I enjoy listening to The Day Before You Came, SOS, The Winner Takes it All, Knowing Me Knowing You.
I find that most of their songs are amazing and enjoyed by just about everyone whether they want to admit or not. I am a bit surprised that I enjoy the same music as my parents did when they were my age!
Oh yes, and I have a collection of ABBA photos on my facebook site.

  11. Johnny Tillotson - Talk Back Trembling Lips
Johnny Tillotson - Talk Back Trembling Lips Tillotson was one-of-a-kind. He could just about sing anything with that relaxed, layed back style of his. While his genre was country pop he had no problems singing rock-in-roll. I didn’t really appreciate how relaxed he appeared when singing until I viewed the music videos on this site. It seems many of the singers from the 50’s and and early 60’s depended on their voice carrying the song rather than the background instrumentals as later singers did…just my 2-cents.

  12. It seems so long ago now but I was about 12 maybe and I remember watching the The Gale Storm show. It was a funny comedy. Back then, there were only 2 or 3 channels on your tv so each show was a bit more special. Anyway, I never heard her sing until I heard “Gale Storm - Dark Moon”…and the memories of that time just flooded in. Thanks!

  13. Michael Jackson - Thriller best song of the ages playing on the thriller jukeboxoh by far the best song ever recorded, sung, viewed has gotta be michael jackson’s thriller!!! and back in the early days when he was just a kid singing i’ll be there. B:ut there are so many more songs that i love - like his music videos on MTV, “Beat It”, “Billie Jean” and “Thriller” — michael completely changes the music video from movie photography into a live presentation and his videos “Black or White” and “Scream” just made him even more popular in the 90s. And dancing…everybody knows his robot and moonwalk!!!. i cant say enough.
we all will miss him - latisha

  14. Down under, we like “I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do”. When ABBA released the song in Australia back in 1975, me and everyone else went wild! Just about all of ABBA songs are great!!!

  15. Friends are telling me that ABBA may sing at some of Michael Jackson’s canceled arena concert dates. This would be great since it’s been since 1983 when they performed together. I’ll bet they’ve been offered $millions…and if they don’t…who will be holding out…Agnetha?

  16. Michael Jackson is Still Alive!

I just heard on CNN news that the autopsy results on Michael Jackson showed a desiccated, emaciated, pure SNOW white skinned, BALD (Yes, bald!!!), old man whose veins were COMPLETELY COLLAPSED.

Come on now, Michael Jackson had just publicly appeared 24 hours earlier at the O2 Center on March 5th, 2009 looking healthy and full of energy where he said “This is it, this really is it”

Why did everyone assume, even the ambulance drivers, autopsy staff, his family and others that the body was that of Michael Jackson? Why didn’t anyone confirm his identity via DNA, blood type, teeth or whatever? Quite possibly, Michael Jackson may have faked his own death! Quit the crying and eulogies…it’s time for an investigation!!!

  17. Is Michael Jackson Alive?

You may have a valid point….This is the same man who made an offer to buy the remains of The Elephant Man from a British museum just to get the publicity …or maybe it was something else? …yes, he is hungry for fame and adulation…no question about it. And he wants to be immortal such that he spends hours in a hyperbaric chamber..wanting to live forever.
